“Susannah” begins with the 18-year-old title character already an outsider. Her parents have died, and she has been raised by her alcoholic brother, Sam. At a local dance, her neighbors call her a “shameless wench.” They’re certain she will come to no good. The newcomer at the dance is the Rev. Olin Blitch, who has come to town to cast out sin, save souls and build a faithful flock. Like every other man present, he has his eye on the vivacious Susannah. The drama turns on an incident the next morning, when the church elders, looking for a new place for baptisms, come across Susannah bathing nude in a nearby stream. She is quickly ostracized by the community, with the elders calling for her to admit her sin and repent.
