1 “The Hard Nut”: Calling Mark Morris’ rendition of “The Nutcracker” story a spoof is not doing this work justice. Sure, there are lots of giggles as Morris, inspired by cartoonist Charles Burns’s take on the story, sets his ballet in swinging 1970s suburbia. But there are also moments of true poignancy, gorgeous production values, sizzling choreography and the Tchaikovsky score performed live by Berkeley Symphony and the Piedmont East Bay Children’s Choir. The work is back in the Bay Area for the first time in five years, for a nine-day run beginning Dec. 15.
