Just as it is no accident that the first operas appeared during the Renaissance, at a time of prodigious cultural blossoming, it is clear that the art form must now be renewed and reinvigorated for the 21st century. We need new stories, new sentiments and new vocabularies, while continuing to elevate human instincts. Heart-wrenching expression is still a defining part of opera, but it should no longer be based on doom and gloom, culpability and false assumptions. In every imperfect union, leadership must come from the right place to compensate for what’s lacking in the whole. In the opera world, preponderance must go, artistically and financially, to the music itself: to the singing, first and foremost, and to the orchestra. That way, both the soul and the pocketbook may be won over again.
